Summer Time Is Here!

Get ready for those long days of summer! We love playing outside with our furry friends, but not being prepared for the hot weather can be dangerous.  Following a few simple rules can make it easy to keep your pet safe while having fun in the sun.

Visit the Vet
A visit to the vet for a pre summer check-up is a must. Get your pet tested for heartworm even if they are on a year-round preventive medication. Mosquitoes are in the air, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Don’t Get Dehydrated
Pets can get dehydrated very quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water. For hikes and trips to the park or beach, be sure to bring some bottled water, and a portable water bowl with you.

Be Aware of Warning Signs
Symptoms of overheating include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, excessive drooling, weakness, or lethargy. If left unchecked this can lead to seizures, diarrhea, and vomit.

ABSOLUTLEY No Waiting in the Car
Never leave animals alone in a parked vehicle. On a warm day, a parked car can become an oven in a short period of time even with the windows open. If it’s 72 degrees outside, it can top 100 degrees in your car.

Make a Splash
Despite what you may think, not all dogs are good swimmers. Don’t leave your pet while they are swimming. After swimming be sure to rinse your dog down to remove chlorine or salt from their fur.

Summer Hair Doo’s
Give your dog a summer time haircut, but don’t completely shave them: The layers of dogs’ coats protect them from overheating and sunburn.
